Due to the economy’s reliance on natural resources and man-made environmental degradation, overgrazing, and two decades of war and neglect, climate change and returning drought have become serious and dominant issues for all Somali families. Climate change may increase the country’s vulnerability to poverty and food insecurity. As a result, GSI has decided to launch capacity building training to Women Farmers to combat household food insecurity through educating women in climate risk management. GSI will cover a series of core capacity building train sessions for women farmers on climate risk. This training will also improve the capabilities of more than 26 women from the most vulnerable households.

2.1 Training Profile

This training will provide women farmer with the skills and knowledge needed to understand, assess and manage climate risks of flood, famine, drought and crop failure in their production systems.

Through this training, participants will gain an understanding of the links between climate change and sustainable production, and learn to identify, assess and manage risks related to climate change, including extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts and cyclones. They will also gain an understanding of the gender dimensions of climate change, and develop strategies for addressing the risks in a way that is gender-responsive.

Participants will learn to identify and implement strategies to reduce the impact of climate change on their production systems, including best practices in adaptation and mitigation. They will also learn how to use technology and data to better understand climate risks and develop appropriate risk management plans.

In addition, participants will gain valuable experience in collaboration and communication, as they work together to develop and implement their climate risk management plans. Through this training, young people and gender-focused organizations will be better equipped to respond to the challenges posed by climate change, and to build a more sustainable future for their communities.
